About Me

My photo
I'm like any other uni student. I like clubbing, parties with friends and surfing if I can get a chance. I grew up in Townsville and miss my great friends there, the strand and maggie, but I still get time to have fun in brissie. I'm studying Civil and Construction Engineering at QUT, and I'm finding it a lot more interesting than most people would think. I'm also doing a mining minor at UQ at the same time so that I can work in the mining industry. I hope to work on mine sites once I graduate, because I love the friendliness in small towns, and it's always more fun to brag about being involved in massive projects. Drop me an email at andrea.dale@connect.qut.edu.au if you want to know more :)

More pics

Just a digger, dragline and a pic I took on the drive out (it was fairly close to Rocky, so there are actually some other cars on the road at this point!).

Random Blurry Pic

I saw this Ad in a construction magazine in India (remember the prices are in rupees). Thought it was interesting to see the differences in advertising amongst other things. In Australia we tend to be more focussed on the visual side, including photos, artists impressions and especially floor plans (or is that just me?). The construction techniques are very different too. I'm not saying worse or better, just different because they are better suited to India for so many different reasons, like weather, economics, social and community views/opinions/acceptance, religion, availability, etc....

I love seeing how things can be done so differently.

Vacation Work

I am half-way through my Vacation Work placement with Thiess at Curragh North. I spent the first month driving the same trucks I was driving with Downer EDi Mining at Norwich Park (Cat 789C).

This is the first week that I have been in the office. It has been really good. I have been doing a bit of data entry stuff, entering details like where the diggers and loaders are working, but have also been doing a bit of engineering work. It's good to see the reports that have to be done for the client, and the internal reporting that happens. There is a lot of Excel work, but that is consistent across all streams of engineering. I really enjoy having a look at all the formulae to see where the numbers are coming from, so it actually makes sense to me. I've also been checking out how the surveyors do scans of the pit. I really enjoy when you get to see how it all comes together, and what is involved in each part.

It is a camp setup again, but it is a really long drive to site here. It takes about 45min from camp to the Thiess site, most of which is driving alongside the conveyor from Curragh North to the central Curragh wash plant. The conveyor at Curragh is pretty impressive. Have a look at the link below for a bit more info on the conveyor, as well as a general overview of Curragh.

I think it would be good to work for an Owner Operator, especially a smaller one like Curragh (owned by Wesfarmers) to learn about the draglines, wash plants, and other equipment that contractors don't always operate, but I am really enjoying working for contractor companies so far.
